Heavy Put-Options Trading in Cisco, Microsoft and GE

The bears are running the show today, as put activity on all of the major
exchanges spiked well above normal levels.
The put/ call ratio rose to 0.74, which means that 74 put contracts were
traded for every 100 calls. Investors snatched up near-the-money puts on
Cisco (CSCO:Nasdaq - news), Microsoft (MSFT:Nasdaq - news) and
General Electric (GE:NYSE - news). (A put gives the holder the right but not
the obligation to sell the underlying stock.)
On the American Stock Exchange,
the Cisco June 20 puts were the most
active, with more than 23,000 contracts
trading hands. According to one trader,
investors are anticipating bad news from tech companies as earnings
confession season creeps closer. The trader also points out that volatility
gauges are on the rise today, which typically indicates that investor fear is
brewing.
Cisco closed down $1.59, or 7.2%, to
$20.46 on Tuesday.
General Electric also pitched in with
most of its activity found in the July 47 1/2 and July 50 puts. The July 47
1/2 puts traded roughly 5,900 contracts on an open interest of 2,065. The
July 50 puts traded 6,300 contracts on an open interest of 1,475. The
premiums on those puts were listed at $1.35 ($135 per 100) and $2.40
($240 per 100), respectively. One trader speculated that most of the
activity was the result of a large spread, a combination of long and short
positions
Today, the European Commission is hearing arguments about GE's
proposed acquisition of Honeywell (HON:NYSE - news). GE is
expected to put forth a slew of witnesses to discuss the benefits of the
marriage. The commission is expected to rule by July 12.
GE's stock fell 28 cents to $49.67.
Over at the Chicago Board Options Exchange, Microsoft options were
receiving most of the attention. The June 70 puts traded about 7,200
contracts on open interest of 26,467. The premium on those puts rose 30
cents to $2.25 ($225 per 100). As for longer-term options, the January 70
puts traded nearly 40,000 contracts on an open interest of 147,101. The
premium on those puts stood at a hefty $8.60 ($860 per 100) in recent
trading. On Friday, TheStreet.com reported a heavy call volume in
January Microsoft options. Microsoft closed off 57 cents at $70.34

demand in Europe has "tailed off more than we thought." Some
slowdown in Asia but main culprit is Europe. Looks like U.S. has
stabilized. Mgmt. says "the news is Europe, the surprise is Europe."
