Aber die Panik, die die Epidemie nach sich zog, machte vielen reisebezogenen Branchen in den am schwersten betroffenen Gebieten erheblich zu schaffen. Die Weltgesundheitsorganisation WHO schätzt, dass der internationale Reiseverkehr in Städte wie Hongkong, Peking und Toronto um mehr als die Hälfte einbrach und die Belegung der Hotels um 60 Prozent zurückging.

Im Nachhinein gesehen konnte die Seuche dem Wachstumspfad in den Regionen Ostasiens, die am meisten darunter zu leiden hatten, wenig anhaben. Das Bruttoinlandsprodukt Chinas stieg in jenem Jahr um robuste 9,3 Prozent und wurde durch die Bedrohung durch die Vogelgrippe nur minimal beeinträchtigt. Hongkong verbuchte eine Zunahme um einen vollen Prozentpunkt gegenüber Vorjahr auf solide 3,3 Prozent.

Doch dieses Mal könnte es anders laufen. Selbst wenn man annimmt, dass der Erregerstamm der mexikanischen Grippe kein tödlicheres Potenzial hat als SARS, schlägt er doch zu einem prekären Zeitpunkt zu. Die Finanzkrise und die sich daraus ergebende wirtschaftliche Kontraktion lastet ohnehin schon schwer auf Branchen und Volkswirtschaften, die höchst abhängig vom Handel, Transport, Tourismus und der Unterbringung sind und die am anfälligsten auf das Virus reagieren.

Darüber hinaus werden die Regierungen weltweit bereits bis zum Äußersten beansprucht - man denke allein allein an die Finanzierung der Bankenrettungen und die massiven Konjunkturpakete. Eine ernste Grippe-Epidemie würde eine vierte oder fünfte Front eröffnen. Um der globalen Wirtschaft – und um der Menschen – willen, möge dies eine Grippe sein, die leicht einzudämmen ist.

Gilead developed a leading flu-fighter, Tamiflu, also called oseltamivir. The biotech group receives royalties on Tamiflu sales from marketer Roche (RHHBY, Trade ).

Shares of Gilead were up 3% at $47.03, as shares of Roche climbed 4% to $31.54. Shares of Glaxo were up 6% at $31.03.

Gilead reported last week that it took in $33 million in Tamiflu royalties, down from $93 million the previous year. Gilead attributed the drop to stockpiling by health agencies worldwide in preparation of a possible pandemic of the avian flu virus.

According to Biota's website, Relenza had sales of $462 million for the quarter ended March 31, garnering the company about $32 million in royalties. Biota noted that the U.K. and British governments had recently ordered "significant" amounts of the product as part of their pandemic stockpiling measures.

Lazard Capital Markets analyst Joel Sendek said in a note early Monday that the Centers for Disease Control suspects other flu-fighting agents are ineffective against the swine flu virus and is recommending either oseltamivir or zanamivir to treat patients.

"Gilead is likely a beneficiary of the current situation. We anticipate increased retail sales of Tamiflu as people with suspicious symptoms consistent with the flu are likely to purchase Tamiflu. We also expect additional government stockpiling in the future given the scale and speed of the current swine flu emergency," wrote Sendek, who tracks Gilead.

Trading amongst the remaining major vaccine makers was more mixed. As opposed to other pharmaceutical products, flu vaccines require months of production.

Shares of Baxter International (BAX, Trade ) rose 3% to $49.33, while AstraZeneca PLC (AZN, Trade ) shares were up 5% at $36.36. Shares of Sanofi-Aventis (SNY, Trade ) edged up 2% to $27.27.

Novartis AG (NVS, Trade ) was the only large-scale vaccine maker trading in the red, with shares down almost 1% at $36.66.

A recent Centers for Disease Control (CDC) "Health Advisory for the 2008-2009 Influenza season" also noted that 98% of 50 HINI influenza isolates were resistant to oseltamivir (Tamiflu(r)) and recommended that influenza vaccination efforts continue.

Am Dienstag entscheidet die Weltgesundheitsbehörde WHO in ihrem Genfer Hauptquartier selbst, ob sie de facto zu einer Weltgesundheitsregierung wird. Zusammen mit "internationalen Experten" entscheidet die WHO über die Anhebung des weltweiten "Pandemie Alarm Levels" auf "Phase 4". Weltweit agieren die Staaten dann nach den Vorgaben eines "Nationalen Pandemieplans", welchen die WHO selbst ausgearbeitet hat.

Darunter befinden sich ein Mann und dessen Tochter in San Diego County, eine 41-jährige Frau in Imperial County sowie zwei Teenager in San Antonio, Texas. Bei allen Fällen in den USA hatten die Opfer keinen Kontakt mit Schweinen. Dr. Wilma Wooten, San Diego County’s Public Health Officer, sagte gegenüber KPBS:

“Wir hatten eine Übertragung von Mensch zu Mensch mit dem Vater und der Tochter."

"Und genauso mit den zwei Teenagern in Texas; sie waren in derselben Schule. Dies deutet ebenso auf eine Übertragung von Mensch zu Mensch hin."

“Dr. Wooten sagt es sei unklar wie sich Leute mit der Schweinegrippe infiziert haben. Sie sagt keiner der Patienten hätte irgendeinen Kontakt mit Schweinen gehabt,"

Obwohl es so aussieht als sei die Situation in den USA unter Kontrolle, verbreitet sich Panik in Mexiko, wo 800 Fälle von Lungenenzündung alleine in der Hauptstadt unter Verdacht stehen, mit der Schweinegrippe in Zusammenhang zu stehen. Der Virus hat besonders junge und gesunde Menschen getroffen, was enorm selten ist bei Grippeausbrüchen. Trotz der Gefahr einer Pandemie bleibt die Grenze zu Mexiko offen.

"Mexiko hat Schulen und Museen geschlossen und hunderte öffentliche Veranstaltungen in der ausufernden, überbevölkerten Hauptstadt von 20 Millionen Leuten abgesagt um zu versuchen, weitere Infektionen zu verhindern,"

sagte Dr. Martin Fenstersheib, der Health Officer von Santa Clara County.

"Wir haben einen neuen Virus, einen brandneuen Stamm der sich von Mensch zu Mensch überträgt und wir sehen außerdem einen virulenten Stamm in Mexiko der damit zusammenzuhängen scheint. Wir sind sicherlich besorgt über diese Eskalierung."

Die WHO besteht darauf dass der Ausbruch "das Potential für eine Pandemie" habe und hat Vorräte von Tamiflu angesammelt, auch bekannt als Oseltamivir, eine Tablette die sowohl die Grippe behandeln als auch eine Infektion verhindern soll. Wie wir bereits in der Vergangenheit betont haben, befinden sich unter jenen die durch den Tamiflu-Impfstoff profitieren, ranghohe Globalisten und Bilderberg-Mitglieder wie George Shultz, Lodewijk J.R. de Vink und der ehemalige Verteidigungsminister Donald Rumsfeld. Rumsfeld spielte eine Schlüsselrolle bei der Panikmache über den Ausbruch von Schweinegrippe im Jahr 1976, als er das ganze Land dazu drängte, sich impfen zu lassen. Viele Lieferungen des Impfstoffs waren verunreinigt, was zu hunderten Erkrankungen und 52 Todesfällen führte. Die Tatsache, dass die Eigenschaften des Stammes neu sind, dass der Virus von Mensch zu Mensch übertragen wird und dass gerade die jungen und gesunden Menschen am schlimmsten getroffen werden, erinnert an die tödliche Pandemie von 1918 welche Millionen Menschen tötete.
Es ist unklar weshalb, wo doch der Virus ein brandneuer Stamm ist, Funktionäre des Gesundheitswesens so sehr auf die Effektivität von bereits vorbereiteten Massenimpfprogrammen vertrauen.

Es wäre nicht das erste Mal dass tödliche Grippeviren in Labors geschaffen wurden und dann mit der Absicht, eine Pandemie auszulösen, verbreitet wurden.

Tschechische Zeitungen spekulierten im März darüber, ob die schockierende Enthüllung über mit tödlichen Vogelgrippe-Viren verseuchte Impfstoffe, welche vom amerikanischen Konzern Baxter an 18 Länder verschickt wurden, Teil eines Plans gewesen ist um eine Pandemie auszulösen. Die Vorwürfe sind ernstzunehmend, da es laut den gängigen Laborvorschriften für die Hersteller von Impfstoffen praktisch unmöglich ist, einen biologischen Kampfstoff zufällig in Impfmaterial zu mischen.

2006 wurde enthüllt, dass die Bayer Corporation entdeckt hatte dass ihr zu injizierendes Medikament für Bluterkranke mit dem HIV-Virus infiziert war. Interne Dokumente belegen dass sie, nachdem ihnen bekannt war dass das Medikament verseucht war, es vom US-Markt nahmen um es in den europäischen, asiatischen und lateinamerikanischen Märkten zu vertreiben. Regierungsfunktionäre in Frankreich mussten ins Gefängnis weil sie es gestattet hatten, dass das Medikament vertrieben wird. Die Dokumente belegen, dass die amerikanische Nahrungsmittel- und Medikamenten-Testbehörde FDA mit Bayer zusammen den Skandal verstuscht hatte und den weltweiten Vertrieb des Medikaments gestattete. Kein leitender Angestellter von Bayer musste sich in den Vereinigten Staaten strafrechtlich verantworten.

In Großbritannien wurde ein Ausbruch der Maul- und Klauenseuche 2007 zu einem Regierungslabor zurückverfolgt, welches von einem amerikanischen Pharmakonzern geteilt wird. Der Ausbruch 2001 erfolgte ebenso als bewusste Verbreitung.

Wie wir gestern berichtet hatten, ging der letzte signifikante Ausbruch einer neuen Form der Schweinegrippe in den USA von der Army Base in Fort Dix, New Jersey aus.

Swine influenza

The Emergency Committee, established in compliance with the International Health Regulations (2005), held its second meeting on 27 April 2009.

The Committee considered available data on confirmed outbreaks of A/H1N1 swine influenza in the United States of America, Mexico, and Canada. The Committee also considered reports of possible spread to additional countries.

Current WHO phase of pandemic alert

International Health Regulations (IHR)

On the advice of the Committee, the WHO Director-General decided on the following.

The Director-General has raised the level of influenza pandemic alert from the current phase 3 to phase 4.

The change to a higher phase of pandemic alert indicates that the likelihood of a pandemic has increased, but not that a pandemic is inevitable.

As further information becomes available, WHO may decide to either revert to phase 3 or raise the level of alert to another phase.

This decision was based primarily on epidemiological data demonstrating human-to-human transmission and the ability of the virus to cause community-level outbreaks.

Given the widespread presence of the virus, the Director-General considered that containment of the outbreak is not feasible. The current focus should be on mitigation measures.

The Director-General recommended not to close borders and not to restrict international travel. It was considered prudent for people who are ill to delay international travel and for people developing symptoms following international travel to seek medical attention.

The Director-General considered that production of seasonal influenza vaccine should continue at this time, subject to re-evaluation as the situation evolves. WHO will facilitate the process needed to develop a vaccine effective against A/H1N1 virus.

The Director-General stressed that all measures should conform with the purpose and scope of the International Health Regulations.
