MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 10, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- A new educational program, Excess Weight and Your Health: A Guide to Effective, Healthy Weight Loss, developed by the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) and the American College of Physicians (ACP), will be released today at Internal Medicine 2013, the annual scientific meeting of the ACP. The booklet and DVD program, funded by an educational grant from VIVUS, Inc. (NASDAQ: VVUS), focuses on encouraging patients to speak with their physicians about obesity and explores the reasons individuals gain excess weight, as well as effective methods for losing weight and keeping it off.

The Excess Weight and Your Health program discusses how people can make better food choices and build more physical activity into their lives, while explaining available medical treatments and surgical options for those struggling with excess weight. The program can be viewed online and ordered free of charge by healthcare professionals at www.ACPonline.org/patient_tools and http://www.obesityaction.org/oacacpdvd.

"Obesity is a complex condition and we need tools like this program that help encourage primary care physicians' communication with patients to find the best treatment plans to achieve the benefits of a healthy weight," said David L. Bronson, MD, FACP, president of ACP.

"Losing weight is often more complicated than just eating less and exercising more," said Joe Nadglowski, OAC president and CEO. "We are proud to partner with ACP, one of the largest physician groups in the United States, to encourage healthcare providers to be proactive in having conversations with their patients about the health consequences of excess weight and obesity and how they can safely and effectively manage their weight."

Internal Medicine 2013 takes place April 11-13, 2013 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco and features more than 6,000 internal medicine physicians, subspecialists, medical students and allied health professionals from around the world.
