As kidney functions deteriorate, the kidney's ability to produce red blood cells declines, and results in anemia. Anemia is a condition in which the patient's blood is deficient in red blood cells and hemoglobin. Kidney dialysis is expensive, and the cost of anemia drugs has been Medicare's single largest drug expenditure, amounting to $3.9 billion in 2007.
Affymax, Inc. (OTCQB: AFFY) is a biopharmaceutical company that was formed to discover, develop and deliver innovative therapies for patients with serious diseases, including kidney disease. Affymax has developed Omontys (also known as peginesatide), an injection for the treatment of anemia due to chronic kidney disease in adult patients on dialysis.
