Microsoft and Compuverde announce SMB licensing partnership

REDMOND, Wash. and KARLSKRONA, Sweden, Feb. 22, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- On Thursday, Microsoft Corp. and Compuverde announced they have entered into a license agreement to enable access to Microsoft's Server Message Block (SMB) file transport technology for Compuverde's software-defined storage (SDS) solution. By incorporating SMB connectivity with the flexibility of Compuverde's SDS, users are able to offload programs or files from multiple servers across multiple locations simultaneously.

"As we continue to invest in licensing intellectual property associated with core technologies, this agreement showcases how Microsoft works with companies like Compuverde to enable solutions like SMB for SDS implementations."

This is the companies' first partnership, and it builds on the trend of Microsoft's SMB program enabling SDS solutions. The agreement includes access to future generations of SMB.
Microsoft's commitment to licensing IP
The partnership is another example of the important role intellectual property (IP) plays in ensuring a healthy and vibrant technology ecosystem. Since Microsoft launched its IP licensing program in December 2003, it has entered into more than 1,200 licensing agreements.
