Bahrain Defense Forces beefed-up security checkpoints in villages across the kingdom Friday as Internet postings promised a "day of rage" and prominent opposition groups downplayed their participation in this latest anti-government movement.
Bahrain is trying to quell a Shiite uprising against the Sunni monarchy as protests have swept across the Middle East in the wake of Egypt’s uprising.
"We are very worried about the safety of the people who are planning to protest," Mattar Ibrahim, spokesperson for the Shiite opposition block al Wefaq told CNBC. "We feel that the ruling family has the green light to use force against them. This is why we haven't announced any kind of support for the movement."
This apparent disarray amongst various factions of the opposition follows a bloody crackdown on unarmed Shiite-led protestors just nine days ago and what international observers say is a concerted push by the country's ruling family to write off the movement as an Iranian-backed foreign plot.
Observers say that, in effect, it is an attempt to paint the events of the last month as a proxy war between Tehran and Western-backed GCC forces.
"If the government can manage this effectively," one long-time diplomat based in Bahrain told CNBC, "the entire movement will be framed as just another arm of Tehran.”
“Already, you've seen muted response from Western governments," the diplomat said. "Maybe they've already written Bahrain off as the price to be paid for GCC support in Libya and elsewhere."
Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa al Khalifa made a thinly-veiled reference to Tehran at the start of the week when he was quoted as saying that Bahrain had foiled a foreign plot several decades in the making.
Bahrain's hard-line prime minister, who bore much of the brunt of protestors' discontent over his 40 years in office, was highly visible in the local press despite continued rumors of major policy divisions within the royal family.
And on Thursday, the country's foreign minister Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, also a member of the ruling family, asserted that there was a campaign against Bahrain.
"The campaign against us from Iran at this stage is political," Sheikh Khalid said in an interview, "but it could have a different posture at any time."
Significantly less visible over the past several days has been the country's Crown Prince, whose calls for a national dialogue last month seemed to fall on deaf ears.
Now opposition leaders have said they are willing to come to the table, but not until foreign tanks are off the streets.
The Crown Prince’s lower policy profile does not however mean he has been sidelined, says one royal court insider who spoke on condition of anonymity.
"The Crown Prince's major achievement over the last decade has been to try to diversify Bahrain's economy. He brought in major international corporations, he tried to brand Bahrain. But still, you see the majority of businesses depend on Saudi Arabia. In the end, it's an economic equation, no one is going to mess with Saudi, not the U.S. and certainly not Bahrain," the insider said.
Consumer Sentiment Weakens, U of Mich./Reuters Index Slips More than Expected to 67.5 from 68.2 in March
U.S. consumer sentiment in March fell to its lowest level in more than a year as gasoline and food prices rose, a survey released Friday showed.
The index was slightly lower than March's preliminary reading, while inflation expectations remained elevated. Even so, the latest consumer survey from Thomson Reuters and the University of Michigan said there was no decline in buying plans.
"While the data clearly indicate that the rate of real consumer spending will diminish, the data do not indicate a renewed downturn is now on the horizon," the report said.
The final March reading on the overall index on consumer sentiment came in at 67.5, down from 77.5 in February. It was the lowest level since November 2009 and was shy of the median forecast of 68.0 among economists polled by Reuters.
The preliminary March figure was 68.2.
The survey's gauge of consumer expectations saw its fifth largest monthly decline, tumbling to 57.9 from 71.6, its lowest level since March 2009. The barometer of current economic conditions fell to 82.5 from 86.9 in February and was below a forecast of 83.2.
Inflation concerns remained high with the survey's one-year inflation expectation at 4.6 percent, the same as the preliminary figure and up from 3.4 percent in February. The survey's five-to-10-year inflation outlook was at 3.2 percent from 2.9 percent.

The United States is flush with liquidity and any further stimulus will not help and could even harm the U.S. economy, Dallas Federal Reserve Bank President Richard Fisher said on Friday.
Fisher, regarded by economists as one of the most hawkish policymakers at the U.S. central bank, said the Federal Reserve's $600 billion bond-buying programme should end as planned in June, with no extension or replacement scheme.
"It's time to call a spade a spade. We did our job as a central bank. We may have overdone our job. We have done enough. We are at risk of doing too much. I don't believe we will," Fisher said at a Bruegel Institute think tank event in Brussels.
"My admonition to our political authorities is, 'don't look at us, look at yourselves. Come, be disciplined, be persistent, press on'. We will no longer press on the monetary pedal in my opinion," he continued.
Fisher said the $600 billion of quantitative easing, dubbed QE2, had effectively monetized U.S. Treasury debt and any plan to extend it would in no way tackle the economy's fundamental problem.
No one was complaining about a lack of credit, he said. "No amount of forthcoming accommodation...will help the process which is afflicting the United States right now and may well make it worse. The problem afflicting the United States right now is that Americans are out of work," he said.
"I will not support further monetary accommodation... There are early signs of speculative activity that I do not consider constructive."
