Sechseinhalb Jahre nach der Pleite der US-Großbank Lehman Brothers zieht der damals zuständige Insolvenzrichter James Peck eine positive Bilanz. "Womöglich war die Lehman-Pleite das Beste, was uns passieren konnte", sagte Peck dem "Handelsblatt" (Donnerstagsausgabe).

Die Insolvenz und ihre Konsequenzen hätten zu neuen Regeln geführt, die das Finanzsystem sicherer machen - etwa zu höheren Kapitalanforderungen und Abwicklungsmechanismen für Banken. "Wir haben verstanden, dass es wichtig ist, dass die operativen Einheiten einer Bank im Geschäft bleiben." Die US-Investmentbank Lehman Brothers war im September 2008 in die Insolvenz gegangen. Die Pleite löste eine Kettenreaktion aus, durch die Finanzinstitute auf der ganzen Welt in Schieflage gerieten.

Peck hatte als Richter am Southern District Court von New York an einem Insolvenzplan mitgewirkt, mit dem Gläubiger rund 60 Milliarden Dollar zurückerhalten sollen.
