1920s - Launching a Legacy

1923
Ralph Thomas McDermott established J. Ray McDermott & Company Incorporated at the age of 24 upon receipt of a contract to build 50 wooden drilling rigs for a wildcatter in Luling, Texas. Knowing he could benefit from his father's long-time experience in the lumber and oilfield construction businesses, Ralph made John Raymond McDermott a partner and the company’s namesake.
1930
Expanded the business from its original headquarters in Eastland, Texas, to Luling, Texas, after a boom in oil exploration in the area.
1932
Moved the company to Houston, Texas, with the continuing oil boom.
Provided different services to the oil industry through three McDermott family-owned businesses: J. Ray McDermott & Co., Elmax Construction, and Stall & McDermott.
1937
Hired the company’s first construction crew, a team of six.
Opened a New Orleans, Louisiana, office.
1938
Introduced the first use of floating drilling equipment in low-lying marshlands of Texas and Louisiana.
1939
Purchased J.G. McMullen Dredging Company and established it as the Olsen Dredging Company.
1946
Reorganized the multiple McDermott family business operations into one: J. Ray McDermott & Co., Inc. of Delaware.
1947
Designed and installed the first fixed platform made of steel out-of-sight-of-land, in 20 feet of water in the Gulf of Mexico for Superior Oil.
Established a contracting division, which was the major operating segment during the early years.
1948
Acquired assets of Harry F. Allsman Company, McDermott’s joint venture partner for several contracting jobs in the Gulf of Mexico, which provided equipment to meet the new demand for offshore construction.
1949
Commissioned construction of the first vessel designed specifically for offshore work (Derrick Barge 4).
The company’s Oil Division was organized.

Our mission is to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and safety of those drilling operations, and we do this in two ways: one, we deploy innovative and simple-to-use, rig-tough technologies that are supported by the industry's most advanced service organization; and we provide the most flexible data and applications to enable effective collaborations between the field and the office.

There are four areas to our product and service ecosystem. The first one is in the area of data acquisition. This is where we help our customers - oil and gas companies or the drilling contractors on oil or gas wells - acquire all the relevant information about what's going on in the drilling process, either down-hole or on the surface. We're really strong in what we call advanced peripherals and advanced sensors around that. Secondly, we enable the communication of that data from the field to the office. So you may have an E&P company, like an Exxon or a Chevron that is drilling a well in a remote area in Canada or elsewhere - we communicate that data back to the office of the customer by way of satellite communications or through terrestrial cellular networks. Third, we store the data for the customer in our own data centers and/or we deliver the data to wherever the customer needs it, either in their own back office or on a mobile device. They can display either real time or historical drilling information on a tablet, on a smartphone, etc. And then, lastly, we ...

Mr. Stolz: Well, by and large the deepwater drillers have impressed on that front. On average that industry has exceeded expectation in managing opex for the year. In particular, a couple of names that stand out for me would be Transocean (RIG) recently, Noble Corp. (NE) and Pacific Drilling (PACD).

TWST: What have they done differently than some of their peers?

Mr. Stolz: It's been a little different I think for each of these companies. For example, Pacific Drilling is relatively new player on the block. They have a younger fleet, a lot of new builds, and frankly we did not expect them to do as well as they had. Not that we were expecting them to have issues while operating efficiently, but generally when you have bigger rigs you go through shakedown periods, you have got a lot of the efficiency you built into over time. As crews get more familiar with equipment, you get accustomed with what spare parts inventory you need to maintain.

But Pacific Drilling really has come out of the gates - come along pretty well, and the last few quarters have suffered very, very few downtime days across the fleet, and it's been very impressive in that has resulted in not only better revenue from missing fewer days of operations but lower opex, as well as lot of times when there are issues and maybe little repairs or things that need to be done, that will pass through the operating expense line of the P&L. And Pacific Drilling has really surprised on that front.

When you look at some of the other companies, the bigger companies, more established like Noble and Transocean, I think part of the outperformance can be due to the fact that these companies, ever since Macondo, really haven't been able to forecast very accurately what they are going to be dealing with, because you are dealing with lower tolerances from new clients. They will put rigs half a rate, making them stand down for any kind of situation or issue on pressure control equipment or on anything that I guess could be perceived as a problem mechanically...

While we expect McDermott to perform below its peers and industry levels in the coming months and see little reason for investors to own the stock, one can look at Athlon Energy Inc. (ATHL), Linn Co. LLC (LNCO) and Warren Resources Inc. (WRES). These U.S. upstream energy operators – sporting a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) – have recorded solid growth and have the potential to rise significantly from the current levels.

Das ist ja ein ganz schöner Absturz der Aktie . Auch bei einem so stark fallenden Ölpreis nicht gerechtfertigt. Im Gegenteil es muss wieder kostengünstiger gefördert werden und so muss investiert werden. Im März auf der Messe in China werden dann wohl wieder die Aufträge verteilt und je nachdem wie die mcdermott dabei abschneidet wird der Kurs sich dann wohl entwickeln
