Yesterday, a group of Timmins residents and visitors learned about Timmins' rich mining history and how the industry has changed over the years.
As part of the Timmins Chamber of Commerce's industrial summer tours, more than a dozen participants got a behind-the-scenes look at one of the area's longest-running operations, Porcupine Gold Mines.
The tour began at Goldcorp's information centre in Schumacher before a bus took the group to the Back Rd., where they saw multiple tailing areas before reaching the Dome Mine in South Porcupine.
Along the way, Goldcorp environmental technologist and tour guide Rachel Primeau gave a history lesson on the area and provided a bird's-eye view of the company's super pit, which ran from 1996 to 2006.
"The Dome has been mining underground since 1909, and to date has mined more than 17 million ounces of gold," Primeau told the tourists.
