May 31 (Bloomberg) -- Crude oil fell for the first time in a week after the U.S. offered to join European talks with Iran if the country halts uranium enrichment.
The U.S. is working to win the backing of China and Russia for a United Nations Security Council resolution compelling Iran to curtail its nuclear efforts, according to a State Department official who briefed a group of reporters. Oil touched a record last month on concern that the dispute over Iran's nuclear program may lead to sanctions against the Islamic republic.
``The Bush administration appears willing to accept a draft UN resolution on the Iranian nuclear affair that omits the use of force,'' said John Kilduff, vice president of risk management at Fimat USA in New York....

The U.S. acknowledges Iran's right to a civilian nuclear power program, Rice said in an address at the State Department. That must not lead to development of an atomic bomb, she said.

``To underscore our commitment to a diplomatic solution and to enhance the prospects for success, as soon as Iran fully and verifiably suspends its enrichment and reprocessing activities, the United States will come to the table with our EU-3 colleagues and meet with Iran's representatives,'' Rice said, referring to France, Germany and the U.K.

Washington/Brüssel (AFP) - Die Vereinigten Staaten wollen die Krise mit dem Iran mit diplomatischen Mitteln überwinden und dabei eine Führungsrolle übernehmen. "Ich glaube, es ist sehr wichtig, diese Angelegenheit diplomatisch zu klären", sagte US-Präsident George W. Bush am Mittwoch in Washington. "Meine Entscheidung heute ist, dass die USA bei der Lösung dieses Problems eine führende Rolle übernehmen werden." Er wolle "alles daran setzen", dass eine diplomatische Lösung zustandekomme, kündigte Bush an. US-Außenministerin Condoleezza Rice hatte zuvor gesagt, dass die US-Regierung unter Umständen bereit sei, sich direkt an den Gesprächen mit dem Iran zu beteiligen. Dazu müsse Teheran aber erst die Urananreicherung einstellen.

Die Aussenminister der fünf Ständigen Mitglieder im Uno-Sicherheitsrat und Deutschlands kommen am Donnerstag in Wien zusammen. Beim Treffen soll abschliessend über ein Angebot an Iran beraten werden. Das Land soll durch verschiedene Anreize dazu gebracht werden, seine Urananreicherung zu stoppen.

Nach den Worten seines Aussenministers Mottaki ist auch Iran zur Fortsetzung der Atomgespräche mit dem so genannten EU-Trio bereit. «Iran ist bereit, ohne jegliche Vorbedingungen einer Wiederaufnahme der Verhandlungen über sein Programm zur Urananreicherung zuzustimmen», sagte Mottaki am Rande einer Blockfreien-Tagung in Malaysia.
