Der nächste Hype - Internettelefonie

13.01.04 01:32
Habe gestern ITXC gefunden. Heute NTTL. Wer weitere kennt, bitte hier melden.

Nortel's VoIP Money Call

By Tom Taulli January 8, 2004

It looks like Nortel (NYSE: NT) is a born-again growth company, thanks to a new deal with Verizon (NYSE: VZ). The deal expands the use of Nortel's voice-over-Internet-protocol (VoIP) technology, with Verizon upgrading its older switches.

VoIP allows for voice communications over the Internet, and is finally hitting critical mass. But the technology needed a big time player to really commit before it truly became the "next big thing." Verizon, the No.1 U.S. phone company, helps the cause and also provides a boon for Nortel. Under the deal, Nortel will be the exclusive supplier of softswitches in this move towards VoIP.

For Verizon, VoIP should reduce expenses, as well as allow for more premium services, such as instant video calling, sharing of electronic documents, unified messaging, and so on.

For Nortel, the deal could be worth up to $400 million. This is no fluke, either. Nortel has VoIP deals with such heavies as Sprint (NYSE: FON) and MCI.

After the telecom depression, executives have become much more sober. However, in the deal's announcement, Nortel's president declared that: "We are on the edge of a new era in telecommunications."

So, it appears 2004 will be the year of VoIP. And, yes, there has already been a surge in the small-cap VoIP stocks, such as Z-Tel Technologies (Nasdaq: ZTEL), deltathree (Nasdaq: DDDC), VocalTec Communications (Nasdaq: VOCL), and 8x8 (Nasdaq: EGHT).

But, there seems little doubt that it is the big players, such as Nortel, that will get the top-tier deals -- and Verizon is as big as they get.

ICOA Records 2003 Achievements that Build Momentum for Significant WiFi and Public Broadband Internet Access Growth in 2004

Thursday January 8, 8:06 am ET

ICOA improved its financial position, increased 220% its public high-speed Internet access points-of-presence, completed two strategic acquisitions, and adopted a high-growth strategy for 2004.

WARWICK, R.I.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 8, 2004-- ICOA, Inc., (OTCBB:ICOA - News), recorded its major achievements of 2003 that now provide a solid base for the company's profitable expansion in 2004.
In 2003 ICOA expanded its core Public Broadband Internet Access business into the high growth Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) market with Wireless Internet (WiFi) Hot Spots and Hot Zones. "WiFi was the logical complement to our core business of Internet Terminal Access, that now allows us to leverage synergies between the two services", said George Strouthopoulos, CEO of ICOA. "As we deploy more and more Hot Spots and Internet Terminals, ICOA expects to gain significant leverage by sharing the common costs of ICOA's Network Operations Center (NOC), Call Center, credit card validation, authentication, transactions and billing systems, across a rapidly expanding number of locations." He added "ICOA's goal is to install Internet Terminals wherever it provides WiFi access; and WiFi access wherever it offers Public Internet Terminals." In 2003, ICOA-owned and managed high-speed Internet points-of-presence increased 220%, from 63 locations to 204 locations at year's end.

Major Expansion in High-Growth Market Segments

ICOA expanded in market segments that generate revenues from user transaction fees, WiFi system sales, network management and support fees. Specifically in 2003, ICOA established beachheads in four key segments - airports, hotels, marinas, and fast casual restaurants.

Airports - ICOA expanded beyond its Internet Terminal business at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) with a combined WiFi and Internet Terminal Business Center system at Greater Baton Rouge Airport, LA (BTR). The company then acquired Airport Network Solutions (ANS), www.airportnetworksolutions.com, which has deployed WiFi service at Sacramento International Airport (SMF) and is in the process of designing and installing WLANS at several other airports in the United States. ICOA has also announced a Letter of Intent to acquire Internet Media Group (IMG) www.imgkiosk.com, an operator of high speed Internet Kiosks at Boston's Logan International airport (BOS).
Hotels - In 2003 ICOA installed both WiFi and Internet Terminal service at a leading New York Hotel and is in the process of acquiring Internet Media Group Inc. (IMG), who currently operates Internet Kiosks at multiple hotels in the Disney World, Orlando, FL area, Boston, Massachusetts as well as hostels nationwide under an agreement with Hostelling International.
Marinas - ICOA is currently operating a 10-square mile WiFi Zone throughout Newport Harbor in Rhode Island. In early November 2003 ICOA announced a three-year agreement with LGW, LLC, owner and operator of California Yacht Marina (CYM) www.californiayachtmarina.com to deploy Wi-Fi Internet access at CYM's Marinas. CYM has over 1,800 boat slips at its four California marinas. ICOA will install and manage Wi-Fi services for four marinas owned and operated by LGW, LLC under a revenue sharing agreement.
Restaurants - In October 2003 ICOA completed the purchase of the assets of QGO, LLC, www.goqgo.com, a national provider of WiFi applications and services that achieved significant momentum with fast casual restaurant operators in urban areas. QGO, with more than 130 restaurant locations under management nationwide, instantly positions ICOA as a major Wi-Fi Service Provider.
Strategic Acquisitions

In 2003 ICOA completed the acquisition of the assets of QGO, LLC, www.goqgo.com, a national provider of WiFi applications and services with a WiFi management portfolio of more than 130 fast casual restaurants located across the United States. In addition to its customer base, the acquisition of the QGO assets strengthened ICOA's transaction processing abilities and customer service capabilities.

Also in 2003, ICOA completed the acquisition of Airport Network Solutions (ANS), www.airportnetworksolutions.com, a leading provider of WiFi services at airports in the United States.

Finally, in 2003 ICOA announced it is in the process of acquiring Internet Media Group (IMG). IMG is a long-standing public Internet provider with more than 80 Internet kiosk locations nationwide.

Improved Financial Position

In 2003 the Company reduced its total indebtedness by $2 million, as previously reported on November 18, 2003. "The action taken by Management over the last year to restructure debt, and settle various vendor accounts has strengthened the Company's financial position and set the stage for growth in 2004," stated Erwin Vahlsing, Jr., CFO.

Enhance Value Proposition

With over 200 active Internet points-of-presence, ICOA is now in a position to open its network to subscribers of major carriers - Sprint PCS (NYSE:PCS-News), AT&T Wireless (NYSE:AWE - News) and T-Mobile (NYSE:DT - News) as well as WiFi aggregators such as iPass (NASDQ:IPAS - News), GRIC (NASDQ:GRIC - News) and Boingo through roaming agreements. "ICOA is providing interoperability, nationwide access and authentication to attract roaming partners," added Strouthopoulos. "By being 'open' we will generate significant increases in traffic and revenue for ICOA and its partners."

About ICOA

ICOA, Inc., www.icoacorp.com located in Warwick, RI, is a provider of Public Broadband Internet Access. The company operates private networks of high-speed Internet Terminals (WebCenter3000(TM)), and WiFi Hot Spots, in 204 locations nationwide. ICOA operates in the most sought after public locations - airports, hotels, marinas, transportation and conference centers. The Company provides fully managed broadband internet access allowing services including: e-mail, e-fax and telephony; business services including printing; e-commerce; and 'venue specific' advertising. ICOA currently operates or manages installations at the San Francisco International Airport (SFO), the Greater Baton Rouge, Louisiana Airport (BTR), Sacramento International Airport (SMF), Rhode Island's Newport Harbor 'Hot Zone', several prestigious Hotels and 130+ Panera Bread (NASDAQ: PNRA - www.panerabread.com) locations.
