MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on its recent analysis of the disinfection equipment market for shale oil and gas wastewater treatment, Frost & Sullivan recognizes Ecosphere Technologies, Inc. and Ecosphere Energy Services LLC with the 2012 North American Frost & Sullivan Award for Product Leadership. Through its advanced oxidation technology, OZONIX®, Ecosphere has answered the challenges of recycling and reusing the water used during hydraulic fracturing operations in the shale oil and gas industry.

Wastewater returned to the surface from the hydraulic fracturing process contains high levels of bacteria and salt compounds that must be treated prior to being reused and recycled. The Ecosphere equipment, operated and distributed through its majority-owned subsidiary, Ecosphere Energy Services LLC, addresses these challenges using its patented OZONIX® technology.

"Ecosphere's advanced oxidation technology excels over competitive solutions in the industry, such as chlorination, biocides, and inhibitors, with key unique features applicable to treating wastewater produced in the shale oil and gas industry," said Frost & Sullivan Industry Analyst Ankur Jajoo. "This mobile on-site solution is offered in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly manner to prevent additional biocide and total dissolved solids treatment."

OZONIX® systems eliminate chemical handling and spills, reduce fresh water consumption, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions produced from additional trucking. Enabling the reuse of water saves companies the costs associated with wastewater disposal and the sourcing of new freshwater streams, while also preserving vital water resources. There are no waste products created by the OZONIX® process, therefore there are no disposal costs for the operator.

The mobile OZONIX® units provide rapid on-site setup and need no external power source due to an on-board 600 KW diesel generator. Positioned within a customized trailer, the units can be easily transported to well sites and can process up to 3,360 gallons per minute on site.

"OZONIX® systems provide energy companies with a sustainable solution to managing the large volumes of water required for hydraulic fracturing," noted Jajoo. "Frost & Sullivan research shows that natural gas companies drilling in shale basins will benefit using the OZONIX® solution for disinfection treatment."

The OZONIX® technology has already been widely accepted and used in oil and gas basins in North America. Ecosphere has designed it to be applied differently to serve both customers' varied needs as well as to provide value for investors. This is a unique concept to the industry because rather than purely selling hardware to service companies, the company also sells licensing agreements that include the hardware sale and a recurring royalty payment for barrels processed, which provides an accurate measure to the usage of the system to the service company.

In the long term, investors and customers benefit far more by implementing Ecosphere's industry-leading, multi-functional solution, which will enhance Ecosphere's market share in the shale oil and gas industry as well as promote expansion into other industrial markets.

"In the development of the OZONIX® advanced oxidation system, Ecosphere has excelled and surpassed its competitors in terms of equipment efficiency, footprint requirements, treatment rates, and sterilizing fracturing fluids," concluded Jajoo. "Further, Ecosphere's innovation has contributed to the industry by providing technologically innovative and cost-effective products."

In recognition, Frost & Sullivan is proud to present Ecosphere Technologies, Inc. and Ecosphere Energy Services LLC with the 2012 Product Leadership Award for the disinfection equipment used in the shale oil and gas wastewater treatment market. Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has demonstrated innovation in product features and functionality. The award recognizes product quality and the value it provides customers as well as high market acceptance and expansion potential.
