RADNOR, Pa., Sept. 7, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The VWR Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to giving back to the science community, recently surpassed $2 million in funds granted to support programs that are aligned with its three strategic priorities: research, health and well-being, and education. Since its inception in 2009, the VWR Foundation has provided more than 225 grants to deserving organizations around the globe.

"Over the course of the Foundation's seven-year history, we have had the opportunity to work with amazing non-profits that are truly making a difference in science," stated Valerie Cucinotta Collado, President of the VWR Foundation. "We would like to thank VWR International, LLC, its customers and employees for helping to make this milestone possible. Your contributions have enabled us to increase our impact." VWR International, LLC, donates a percentage of all VWR Collection product sales to the Foundation. In addition, the Company makes donations on behalf of employees participating in wellness events around the country.

The VWR Foundation exceeded $2 million of charitable giving by awarding The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) in La Jolla, CA, with a $65,000 Legacy Grant to build a VWR Foundation Community Teaching Lab. This lab will serve as the primary location for TSRI teachers and students to perform hands-on scientific demonstrations, including training for new graduate students on basic molecular and cellular biology techniques. TSRI emphasizes the creation of basic knowledge in the biosciences and the education and training of researchers preparing to meet the scientific challenges of the future.

The VWR Foundation has provided grants to 120 organizations and programs. The Legacy Grant program was started in 2012 to actively engage with non-profits on larger science programs that exceed the Foundation's $10,000 Founders Grant limit. In 2014, the VWR Foundation announced that its grants distributed totaled more than $1 million.

The VWR Foundation looks forward to working with more organizations to enable science.
