NiSource Named to Dow Jones Sustainability Index

MERRILLVILLE, Ind., Sept. 14, 2016

"We are proud to have once again been named a member of the DJSI North America index," said NiSource President and Chief Executive Officer Joseph Hamrock. "Our sustainable approach to safety, reliability, customer experience and community engagement is core to our strategy. And our 7,500 employees are dedicated to providing our customers with the energy they need to cook, use hot water, and light, warm and cool their homes and businesses." 

The DJSI North America Index and respective subsets track the performance of the top 20 percent of the 600 largest Canadian and United States companies in the S&P Global Broad Market Index. In the Multi and Water Utilities category, 13 North American companies were invited to participate in the assessment and four were selected. NiSource has been named to the DJSI 10 times since its launch in 1999.

Measuring Progress

Each year, NiSource issues a Sustainability Report that tracks the company's progress toward building lasting customer-focused solutions, environmental stewardship and social responsibility. Information from the annual Sustainability Report is used as part of the DJSI evaluation process.

Highlights from NiSource's latest Sustainability Report included:

• Industry-leading safety performance - Last year, NiSource invested more than $3.2 million across its companies to increase public awareness on how to avoid damage to underground systems in addition to training emergency responders on natural gas safety to ensure they know how to respond if underground facilities are damaged.
• Top-tier customer satisfaction - New technologies and improved processes were introduced in 2015 to make it easier for customers to do business with its companies. This includes improved appointment windows, online outage reporting, website enhancements and a new bill layout. Plus, NiSource companies helped customers save more than $9.6 million through participation in energy efficiency programs in 2015.
• Investments that systematically and efficiently deliver service integrity - With nearly $1.4 billion invested in natural gas distribution system and electric operations in 2015, NiSource is enhancing safety, reliability and customer service and improving environmental performance. From replacing aging infrastructure to upgrading substations, these investments translate into a safer, more reliable energy system to serve our customers and communities.
• Recognized among the best places to work by all in our communities - Focusing on training, development, employee engagement, and inclusion and diversity, NiSource is committed to being recognized as a best place to work in our communities. The construction of new state-of-the-art training facilities is one step in developing great talent across the organization. The first of these new training centers opened in July.
