MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., July 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Omnicell, Inc. (NASDAQ: OMCL) today announced that Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital ("Henry Mayo") has selected the Company's medication automation solutions to streamline provider workflows and enhance patient care at its facility in Valencia, Calif. As construction begins on the hospital's new patient tower—which is expected to add over 140 patient beds—nursing and pharmacy leadership chose to update Henry Mayo's medication automation solutions to ensure the highest level of safety for patients.

The new Omnicell technology, including automated medication dispensing cabinets, is expected to help nurses at Henry Mayo spend more time with their patients. The Omnicell cabinets include a system that enables nurses to queue up medication orders at patients' bedsides rather than having to wait in line at the cabinet. Additionally, a single-dose dispensing system incorporated into the cabinets improves security and virtually eliminates the need for manual narcotic count-backs, which saves time that can now be spent on patient-facing activities. The greater capacity of the Omnicell cabinets compared with the hospital's current system will allow more medications to be securely stored at the nursing units, reducing the number of pharmacy deliveries.

The hospital will also be adding an automated dispensing cabinet tailored to the operating room and anesthesia provider workflow. Heightened security in this area, where many powerful narcotics are used, is essential to improving patient safety and reducing drug diversion risk. While these specialized cabinets provide security, they also provide convenient access to medications needed during surgical procedures.

"As we looked for a solution that increased the security of our medications in the OR and on the patient floors, we also wanted tools that helped streamline the distribution process for our nurses," said Harry Shamamian, PharmD, MBA, director of pharmacy services, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. "Omnicell's solutions offer both the security and flexibility we require while helping to expand the total medication capacity that our nurses need."

"We are pleased to partner with Henry Mayo, which has been recognized as one of the nation's 'Most Wired' hospitals for four consecutive years," said J. Christopher Drew, president, North American Automation and Analytics for Omnicell. "As this facility continues to grow, we look forward to offering additional solutions that will help maintain excellent patient safety and provider satisfaction while ensuring medication security across the hospital."
