WILMINGTON, Del., Aug. 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Direct Energy employees arrived at the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware dressed in superhero capes and accompanied by several local legislators and some well-known caped crusaders.   Superwoman, Mrs. Incredible, Spiderman and Michelangelo from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles scooped out Direct Energy "lightning bolt" flavored ice cream and delivered a corporate gift from Direct Energy to show their support for families with seriously ill or injured children receiving medical treatment at nearby hospitals. The team presented a $10,000 check to Pamela Cornforth, the President and CEO of the Ronald McDonald House, and announced an ongoing partnership that will include cash donations for each Delaware resident who switches their energy supplier to Direct Energy.

The initial $10,000 donation will be used to sponsor a guestroom in the house - The Direct Energy Room --  in perpetuity.

"Direct Energy's mission is to make a difference in people's lives," said Cullen Hay, the General Manager for U.S. Energy at Direct Energy. "This donation to the Ronald McDonald House will make a difference in the lives of children and families in the Delaware community where we serve consumers electricity. We are thrilled to partner with such a well-deserving and impactful philanthropic organization."

The State of Delaware formally named Direct Energy as the "Electric Retail Supplier Exclusively Contracted by the State of Delaware" on June 22nd for its 315,000 residents and businesses in the Delmarva territory and for Delaware Electric Cooperative's 84,000 customers. This is the first such program and designation made in the United States.

It is estimated that residential customers may save on average $15 per month with Direct Energy's low fixed electricity prices, set at 10 to 18 percent below Delmarva's current price to compare. 1Other benefits are available and both residential and small business customers can potentially save a further 10 to 12 percent on their heating bills and about 15 percent on their cooling bills by receiving at no cost a Nest Learning Thermostat.2 Small businesses can save 5 percent off of Delmarva's current price to compare.3

As part of the program, Direct Energy provided the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware with an initial $10,000 charitable contribution and then pledged an additional $5 donation for each online customer enrollment and $2.50 for each offline customer enrollment throughout the life of the two-year program.  Under this program, almost 400,000 customers are eligible to participate in this program.

"On behalf of the Board of Directors, Volunteers, Staff and the families we serve we thank Direct Energy for their commitment to our Ronald McDonald House and our families," said Pam Cornforth, President of the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware. "Companies such as Direct Energy are critical to our mission of "keeping families close."
