COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Nov. 20, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Colorado Technical University (CTU) opened its doors in 1965 with a strong commitment to providing education and skills training to those serving in the U.S. armed forces. Now, nearly 40 years later, the university's dedication to active duty military and veteran personnel and their families has reached a new milestone: since 2008, 300 CTU Wounded Warrior Scholarships worth nearly $6.5 million have been awarded to active duty and veteran personnel, and spouses of wounded service members to enable them to pursue a college degree.

The university, in alliance with the nonprofit Yellow Ribbon Fund, recently held its sixth annual scholarship competition, which resulted in the selection of 50 new award recipients. Each year, the program awards 25 college scholarships to wounded service members and veterans and awards another 25 college scholarships to spouses of wounded soldiers. CTU is one of a few universities to offer assistance of this magnitude. The scholarship covers the full cost of tuition, course materials and fees, as well as a new laptop computer. "We are extremely grateful to those who have sacrificed so much to serve our country and are proud to recognize them by supporting their higher education," said Jack Koehn, president of CTU. "Many Americans underestimate the struggles military families have when a soldier is injured, and in particular, they may not understand the challenges experienced by spouses who unexpectedly become their family's sole provider. We're proud that these scholarships help our country's bravest men and women and their spouses gain an education, transition to civilian careers and continue to provide for their families."

The university's dedicated military admissions advisors, who understand the unique needs of military and veteran students, work with the recovering service members and veterans to begin or continue their education. Scholarship recipients pursue their degrees online, allowing those who don't live near a campus, those who want to focus on spending time at home with children or family, those who are deployed or relocated to new regions or those with recent injuries to take classes at their convenience using CTU's award-winning Virtual Campus. Online coursework also affords spouses of wounded warriors flexibility as they pursue degrees while caring for their loved ones and continuing their careers.

"CTU is committed to offering the best support, flexibility and resources for military and veteran students and their families pursuing higher education," Koehn said. "Our Department of Military Education advisors are specially trained to offer administrative and academic support to the military population, and are familiar with the unique challenges and obstacles faced by military students while attending school. Advisors assist active military and veteran students, many who have been out of school for a number of years, to adapt to their new academic setting and connect them to close-knit university networks that offer a sense of community wherever they are in the world."

Among its military-friendly qualifications, CTU participates in the Post-9/11 GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon Program, and has been named a Military-Friendly School by Victory Media Inc. – the publishers of G.I. Jobs magazine, Military Spouse magazine and Vetrepreneur magazine – for five consecutive years. CTU has received the Military Times' Best for Vets distinction in 2013 and 2014, and recently aligned with Joint Base Andrews in Prince George's County, Md., to provide education advisement services to Air Force members. This year, the university formed a new agreement with the National Guard Bureau Homeland Security Institute (HSI) in which certain National Guard members can earn credits that can be applied toward CTU's Master of Science in Homeland Security (MS-HLS) degree program.
